Comparative analysis of the doctrine and activities of Baptist and Presbyterian churches in Kazakhstan

Abstract

This article presents a comparative analysis of the doctrines and religious practices of the Baptist and Presbyterian churches – representatives of Protestant movements in Kazakhstan. The authors examine the origins and development of these religious movements in the country, as well as the specifics of their theological teachings, church governance, and levels of social engagement. Protestant denominations occupy a distinct place within the religious landscape of modern, secular Kazakhstan, a state that pursues a policy of religious pluralism. Among these groups, the Baptist and Presbyterian churches are distinguished by their specific theological principles, organizational structures, and missionary activities. Therefore, the authors aim to conduct a comparative analysis of the doctrinal positions, organizational structures, and practical activities of Baptist and Presbyterian churches in Kazakhstan. This approach makes it possible to gain a deeper understanding of the institutional development of Protestantism in Kazakhstan and its interaction with society and the state. The study employs comparative-historical analysis, confessional analysis, the systemic-structural method, and content analysis of doctrinal documents. The novelty of the article lies in its comprehensive comparison of two Protestant traditions within the Kazakhstani context, enabling the identification of the distinctive features of their theological identities and their models of interaction with the state and society. The research reveals both common characteristics arising from their shared Protestant heritage and significant differences in their understanding of baptism, predestination, and the structure of ecclesiastical authority. Furthermore, the article concludes that these denominations have developed specific strategies of adaptation to the religious environment of contemporary Kazakhstan.
