Development of Religious Studies in the Republic of Kazakhstan: Current State, Problems and Prospects

Abstract

This article focuses on the main scientific problems of religious studies development in Kazakhstan during the period of significant changes in the religious sphere. It reviews features of the research institution, the discipline, factors determining its present state, and areas for development. The priorities for this study are defined by the revival of religion, the changing variety of church denominations, and the indispensability of scholarly backing of the state policy on religion. The main aim is to present a thorough evaluation of the present situation of religious studies and support the ways of its updating. The research is grounded in the use of systemic, comparative, and institutional approaches together, enabling the discipline to be seen as a unified academic and educational system. They encompass a review of literature, analysis of the content of legal documents, and synthesis of statistical data. The findings show that religious studies in Kazakhstan is still in the process of institutional development. Academic programs are expanding, and interdisciplinary collaboration is becoming stronger. Nevertheless, there are still challenges which include shortages of staff, limited depth from a methodological perspective, and weak integration into the international academic community.
