Abstract

This article discusses the essence of punishment and prevention used as a mean of spiritual education of human morality according to the ayats of the Qur'an. Linguistic and terminological meanings of the word "punishment" in the Qur'an are revealed in the introductory part of the article. In the main part of the article it is said about the purpose of punishment in the Quran, namely the main purpose of punishment is to keep the faith, mind, life, property and the humankind.

A branch of science that studies these five purposes is called «مقاصد الشريعة», purposes of Shariah. Scholars of Islamic law divide all the rules and regulations based on these 5 goals.The purpose of punishment in the Quran is not only to punish the perpetrators, on the contrary to prevent crime and sin, to send the guilty man on the path of correction. Some executions are carried out in the presence of the public, as the edification of the people in order to avoid this into account.
